Advancement and
Promotion Policy
Residents have an opportunity to review their academic progress every quarter. The majority of educational planning should be done with their advisor, but assistance from other faculty is also encouraged.
In order to be promoted from PGY-1 to PGY-2, the resident must be deemed capable to function as a night float resident by a consensus decision of the faculty. Primary criteria the faculty use to make this determination is the accuracy of clinical assessments and the ability to recognize when a patient is unstable medically. Adequate support and supervision is available in the hospital, but it is predicated on the resident’s ability to ask for help.
Promotion throughout the second and third year is contingent upon adequate progress and performance based on rotational evaluations and assessment of the faculty.
Opportunities to learn from mistakes are assumed to be a normal part of residency training.
If at any point in the residency, advancement or promotion is in jeopardy, the resident will have a discussion with the Program Director and a written improvement plan will be provided to the resident. At that point, GME Policy will be followed as outlined in the house staff manual.
