Ambulatory Training Sites

The two family practice centers are located within five miles of Henry Ford Hospital, they have much in common and share the department’s faculty and other educational resources. Two family practice centers will be used for resident continuity practice, Detroit East and Detroit Northwest, both Henry Ford Medical Group Health Centers. Detroit East site has many patients who work in industrial jobs or various professions. Both sites have laboratory and x-ray capability on site, as well as computer linkages for access to clinical and other information. Both also emphasize comprehensive family care, including ambulatory procedures, disease management and wellness programs, community linkages, and emphasis on the personal relationship between physicians and their patients.

Ambulatory experiences also include rotational ambulatory training in prenatal care at Community Health and Social Services (CHASS). This is a federally subsidized multi-ethnic inner-city community health center in Southwest Detroit, where family practice faculty work with social workers, mental health, nutrition, health education, and other professionals to provide general primary care and social support for a predominantly Hispanic local community. The family practice inpatient service is comprised of resident teams supervised by core family practice faculty. A senior supervising resident leads 1st and 2nd year junior residents in managing patients admitted from the family practice centers, other primary care practices, and inmates from the Wayne County Jail in a special contract.

Night call is organized as a two-week block rotation for senior residents, who are joined by junior residents from the team in an every fourth night rotation. The family practice service is busy and diverse and offers an outstanding clinical experience. Residents have adequate autonomy, but help when they need it. The faculty organize daily didactic teaching sessions to complement the clinical experiences of patient care. The family practice service is recognized for its quality of care, its efficiency, and its service orientation to patients.
