Geriatrics Month, Internal Medicine, Amerza Beg, M.D.

Didactic Session , Suite 2F One Ford Place at 9 am

The Geriatrics reading list is available online through: Internal Medicine Resident Toolkit, Internal Medicine Rotation Curricula, Geriatric Outpatient Curricula and Reading list. Read all of the articles during the month. Each intern & resident will be expected to prepare a review of their assigned article to present to all during this day. Power Point presentations or hand outs of the major points have been helpful in the past. Also do a medline search for more recent articles on your topic or other sources, and use this information to form an up to date review of the subject. The articles are available in the tool kit. Don't wait until the last minute!

Boulevard Temple Nursing Home (BT)

Park in the parking lot behind the facility. Plan to arrive at 7:30 am. Go to the "Clinic" which is to the right down the first hallway after you enter from the lot.

Pick up the list of your assigned patients. If staff physician is not there yet, go to the floor and start seeing the patients assigned to you, the staff will meet you there shortly. You will see new admissions, and do follow up visits of patients. Check the Acute Log Book. Tuesdays, you will be able to leave around noon and can plan to attend noon conference and have the afternoon to study, unless an afternoon site is listed on your schedule. Mondays and Thursday's, you'll be there all day unless an afternoon site is listed.

Center for Senior Independence (CSI)

It is important that you arrive at CSI by 7:45 am. The morning interdisciplinary team meeting begins at 8:00 am and is an important part of your experience. Bring your lunch as you will be here all day. You will not go to noon conference on these days.

Palliative Care

You should arrive by 8:30 am at Clara Ford Pavilion and contact Virginia Paige NP. She will let you know where you will be for the days of your Palliative Care and Hospice experience. Make sure that you get directions to the Hospice Residence, when you go there. It is now in Warren on Ten Mile on the 2nd floor of the Bortz East Nursing Home.

Neuropsychology

Plan to arrive at One Ford Place, suite 1 E, by 8:15 am. The clinic starts promptly at 8:30 am. Bring your lunch, as you will be here all day. You will not go to noon conference on this day. Make sure that you also bring reading material to study, as there may be free time through the day.

Fall Clinic

It is located on K-7 of main Hospital Building. Plan to arrive by 1:00 pm. You won't have time for noon conference on this day. You will be observing the evaluation of two patients in the Fall Clinic with Dr. Alvord.

Note: It is important that you look at your schedule each day to make sure that you go to the right place. An attempt is made to have you at the same place several days in a row, but due to clinics and other scheduling considerations, this isn't always possible. If you are unable to be at an assigned site due to illness or any other reason or if you are going to be more than a few minutes late, call Sue in the Medicine Residency office and medical staff at the site
