[Blackboard] You will be expected to present you final presentation in PowerPoint. During this session you should learn the fundamentals of using PowerPoint:

Objectives of session:

  1. Residents will learn how to use PowerPoint to create a presentation.

Outline

  1. Overview of PowerPoint Modes (bottom left corner tool bar) 
    • Slide mode - full slide on screen with editing capabilities 
    • Outline mode - script editing capabilities only - useful for creating a series of text and bullet slides 
    • Slide sorter - tiny slides- useful for moving, copying & cutting slide show
    • Slide show - to preview your final product
  2. Creating a new presentation
    • Start PowerPoint
    • Select blank presentation <OK>
    • New slide layout appears
    • Double click on slide that meets your needs
  3. Title slide
    • Click in text boxes to add content
    • Highlight text to change features (font, style, etc.)
    • To move or size
      • click on margins around text box
        • drag, stretch, drop 
          • Moves entire box
          • Changes size of box
    • To insert a picture
      • Insert - Picture - Clipart
      • Select type of collection
    • Select desired picture by double-clicking on picture.
    • Picture will be inserted onto graph; it can be sized and moved, as desired.
  4. Add a new slide
    • Insert - new slide (places slide after current slide)
    • Select slide type from choices
  5. Bullet slide
    • Select bullet list type from choices
    • Enter text, sizing and formatting as desired
  6. Bar chart
    • Select type of bar chart from choices - double click
    • Add title, edit as desired
    • Double click in chart area to add graph - datasheet appears
    • Edit row and column names
    • Add data
    • Delete extraneous rows and columns by highlighting and clicking delete key
    • Change features of just about any aspect of chart by double clicking on that object - dialogue boxes for gridlines, column width and depth, colors, column shapes, data values, axes
    • Click outside of chart area to make data sheet go away
    • Add text box anywhere on your slide for labels by using A icon on bottom toolbar - double click and move cursor to desired location, enter text, text can be sized and moved
    • Note: you can change chart type while in datasheet mode - select chart from header menu - chart type - change chart type - this is where you can change 3D option also
  7. Using Outline mode - very useful for text slides
    • Select outline mode from bottom left toolbar
    • Arrow icons on left vertical tool bar are used for indenting and unindenting (pushing contents on line to higher or lower level)
    • Highlight text to change characteristics (font, size, properties)
  8. Slide sorter
    • Useful for getting your slides arranged in the order desired for presentation
    • Click on slide to select, use edit - copy, cut, move
  9. Adding character to your presentation
    • This can be done last to avoid having background and color get in the way of you slide data entry and editing
    • Format
      • Apply design
      • Select desired background from choices - small sample slide will guide you
    • Apply - all charts will be changed
  10. Slide show mode
    • View your final product - use Page Up and Page Down to scroll through presentation
