During the rotation, you will be given a portable computer to use. Here is an outline of things you will learn when you receive the computer: |
Objectives of session:
- Laptop computers will be distributed to residents for use during the month (you will need to sign a rental agreements).
- Residents will learn how to use the laptop computers, including use as stand-alone units and connected to the hub of the Family Practice network.
- Residents will learn about the "Innovations in Health Education" (IIHE) website including how to access it locally and through the Internet.
- Residents will be oriented to the instructional components of the IIHE website including the epidemiology course and the computer tutorials.
- Residents will become oriented to the Microsoft Access Resident Database which will be used for the Microsoft Access session.

- Hook up all cords and peripherals before turning on power.
- Turn on power, allow computer to get to log-on screen
- Connecting to the Family Practice network (this is done in 2C conference room only) - you will need this to use the printer and to access IIHE via the internet
- After hooking up network cable, mouse (if desired) and power cord, turn computer on.
- Each computer is a "site" - When starting computer, you will be prompted for your password. When connecting to the network, your password is your site number.
- For example: if your computer is site-1 your password is site1
- Enter password and click OK
- Using the computer stand-alone
- Hook up mouse and power cord
- Turn on computer
- At log-on screen, just hit ESC key, no need to enter password
- Connecting to IIHE website outside of classroom (this will be required to use discussion groups and other websites. All other IIHE content is on local IIHE). Don't use phone lines inside of HFHS.
- For DELL computers
- Insert modem cable into PC card on left side of laptop (modem access pops out of PC card)
- Insert opposite end of modem cable into phone jack
- For COMPAQ computers
- Insert modem cable into phone jack on left side of computer
- Insert opposite end of modem cable into phone jack
- For all, turn on power, click on IIHE icon when screen appears

- Turning off the computer
- From the Start Menu, choose Shut Down.
- Choose Shut Down
- Wait for the computer to turn off before unplugging any cables.
- Be very careful when unplugging the network connector from the computer. Squeeze the sides of the connector before unplugging it.
