Sampling and Data Collection & Screening

Objectives of Session

  1. Residents will become familiar with issues in sampling methodology.
  2. Residents will learn about forms and data management for research studies.
  3. Residents will learn about screening measurement issues

Outline

  1. Sampling
    • Unit of observation
    • Randomness
    • Sample size and hypothesis testing
    • Using EpiInfo to determine sample size
  2. Data collection issues
    • Forms design
      • Scannable, pre-printed
    • Question design
      • Open ended vs. closed ended
      • Pre-coded responses
    • Pilot testing forms
  3. Screening
    • False positives/ false negatives
    • Positive predictive values
    • Negative predictive values
    • Criteria for screening

Study Questions

  1. What are some of the issues considered when setting sample size?

  2. Describe the relationship between hypothesized effect and sample size.

  3. The following table contains the result of a screening program. Calculate the sensitivity, specificity, the positive predictive value (PV+) and the negative predictive value (PV-).

Disease

Screening test Present Absent Total
Positive 900 4,950 5,850
Negative 100 94,050 94,150
Total 1000 99,000 100,000
